This section explains how to use App migration on Android versions 5.0 to 9. In those versions, all downloaded apps are required to be 'granted' permission to write to the SD card. This is not necessary for all devices since some manufacturers (e.g. Samsung) will automatically grant Smart mineralogist the required permissions without any involvement on your part. But should you be required to grant this permission, below is a step by step guide on how that can be done. This procedure is only done once per SD card. If you are unsure that this guide is for you, then go to your device’s 'Settings > About phone > Android version'. Try to compare the numbers shown there with the following numbers:
5.0, 5.0.1, 5.0.2, 5.1, 5.1.1
6.0, 6.0.1
7.0, 7.1, 7.1.1, 7.1.2
8.0.0, 8.1.0
9
If your number matches with any of the above versions, then this guide is for you.
App migration on Standby, Android 6.0.x
Before you begin, make sure your SD card has a label on it. A label is a predefined name that a manufacturer or you may use to identify your card. Some manufacturers may omit this label. Different operating systems can change this label differently, but it usually involves right clicking your SD card and choosing to 'Rename' it. An empty label will cause this procedure to fail and crashing Smart mineralogist in the process. This is not a defect with Smart mineralogist but an Android one.
For Android versions greater than 6.0, you must provide permission to read and write to your internal storage or this tool will not work. App migration will ask for this permission when first launched.
Take note that the permission granted above does not grant Smart mineralogist permission to write to the SD card. That must be provided separately using a different procedure explained further below.
When launched, App migration will display a window with a grid of rectangular cards which represents all the available storage options on your device. Attached USB storage disks or memory pens are ignored.
If your device lacks additional storage options, then only your primary storage will be shown, represented by a Phone or Tablet Icon.
The storage option containing the App’s assets will have a solid bold white border as well as the word 'occupied' underneath its icon.
The storage options where you can move the asset files will contain a modest white border as well as the available space the App is allowed to use for moving purposes.
The tool will auto remove all legacy asset files it finds on your device, which might have been left there due to uninstalls or app upgrades.
Tapping any storage option apart from the 'occupied' storage should initialize the asset transfer routine. But if it’s your first time to use this tool, a prompt will pop up that explains the need to obtain permission to write to your SD Card. If you tap its 'GOT IT' button, then a new system folder chooser will appear similar to the one displayed below. If it’s your first time to run the folder chooser, then it will appear to be blank.
The system folder chooser when first run.
To reveal its content, you need to tap on its overflow menu on the top right and select the 'Show SD card' option. On some devices, the option may be labeled 'Show internal storage'.
If done successfully, the folder chooser should now display all your storage options on its opened navigation menu. You can manually open the menu if it remains closed. Tap your 'SD card' (its name varies based on the label you used on it) to reveal its folders but DO NOT TAP ANYTHING ELSE from there, such as a different folder. If you accidentally tapped a folder, open the menu and tap your 'SD card' again.
Selecting your SD card from the folder chooser.
At the bottom of the file chooser, there should now be an option to 'SELECT SD card'. Again, the name there depends on the label of your SD card and can be different. Tap that button to return to Smart mineralogist.
Finalizing your SD card selection.
If the procedure was successful, you will receive a prompt asking you to confirm the assets transfer to your SD card. Tap 'Yes' to the popup that follows and wait a few seconds for the tool to finish its work. If you do not receive this prompt then the procedure has failed and you need to redo it again.
The tool will confirm a successful transfer by showing a solid bold border on your new storage option that now houses the assets. It will also contain the text 'occupied' underneath its icon. You can now repeat the transfer procedure any number of times. Should you replace your SD card, you will need to provide this permission again for the new SD card.
