The classification tool is a search and analysis tool for Dana and Strunz mineral classification IDs, which are both supported by Smart mineralogist. The tool is split in two groups of functions with Dana and Strunz IDs getting proprietary dedicated functions. These functions have three options namely 'Search', 'Access' and 'Class' for both ID systems. In the 'Search' mode, the tool expects you to input a valid ID based on the format of the ID (Dana and Strunz IDs have different formats) and perform a database search for the ID. In the 'Access' mode, the tool will also expect you to input any ID and it will attempt to analyze it before generating its classification scheme.
The 'Class' mode allows you to group minerals based on their respective Dana or Strunz classes. Meaning, should you want to know which minerals are silicates, oxides or any other class you desire, this option will list them all by analyzing which class their ID belongs to. Consequently, this option is limited by the number of IDs available in the Smart mineralogist database since not all minerals have already receive their Dana and/or Strunz IDs. As of June 2019, 4428 minerals in the database had complete Dana IDs, and 4620 for Strunz.
Classification tool on standby
To learn more about mineral classification or how the classification IDs are derived, try to read the fully dedicated 'Classification' under "Learn Mineralogy" to get an idea on what’s included or why this tools may be of use to you. Each of the Dana or Strunz tool has its own dedicated section you can read that provides additional information on the Dana and Strunz ID formats.
All the tools under Resources have four action icons only. Their purposes are already discussed on the introduction section of these chapters.
When using large screen devices, the screen is fragmented in two with the properties described below appearing on the left (if landscape) or top (if portrait) of the screen. The second fragmented screen is used to display search results.
The first two Dana options have four input text field that matches the X.X.X.X format of a Dana ID. When inputting your ID, each X on the format has its own input text field. To input your ID, do the following…
Make sure the desired Dana ID option is activated by tapping its corresponding checkbox. That is, tap the 'Search' option if you need search ability or the 'Assess' option if you need assessment.
Input your first X parameter and press the next button on your keyboard to advance to the next input field.
Repeat the inputs until the whole ID is inserted.
If you need to switch between 'Search' mode and 'Assess' mode without losing your ID, tap the switcher button (represented as an up/down arrow).
Dana ID input
The search option is flexible and will be able to process your search request provided a minimum of two ID details are included in the search text fields. Example, if you input only 42.09 on the two left most Dana ID input fields, you will be able to search (with lesser accuracy) towards the partial ID as opposed to inputting a complete ID like 42.09.03.01
However, the 'Access' option requires a minimum of three inputs to perform an ID analysis. Example, your input ID must contain a minimum of 42.09.03 for 'Assess' to be able to analyze your ID. Inputting a complete ID like 42.09.03.01 is still permissible and significantly more accurate.
Similarly to other tools, the Dana options input fields have filters to verify that what you’re inputting matches the format for a Dana ID. The filters check for…
If the first left text field does not exceed the number 78, does not have more than 3 letters and should it have 3 letters, the first two digits are numeric.
If the center left text field does not exceed the number 19, does not have more than 3 letters and should it have 3 letters, the first two are numeric.
If the center right and last right text fields do not exceed the number 29, do not have more than 3 letters and should they have more than 3 letters, the first two are numeric.
The 'Dana class' option allows you to search for minerals based on the 78 Dana classes in the Dana’s new mineralogy 8th edition standards. You can also search for minerals that lack Dana IDs. To do this, begin by…
Tapping the 'Dana class' checkbox to activate the 'Choose class' dropdown menu on its right.
Tap the dropdown menu to see the 78 different classes for you to choose from.
Tap the desired class on the list to confirm your selection.
Tap the floating button at the bottom of the tool to begin a search for your class.
The first two Strunz options have three input text fields that each matches the X.AA.nnn format of a Strunz ID. When inputting your ID, the X occupies the left text field; the AA occupies the center text field and finally the nnn occupies the right text field. To input your ID, do the following…
Make sure the desired Strunz ID option is activated by tapping its corresponding checkbox.
Strunz ID input
Similarly to 'Dana' options before it, the 'Strunz' search option is also flexible and will allow searches provided a minimum of two ID details are inputted correctly. This is also true of the Assess tool which means inputting X.AA from our format above should be enough to perform a search or an assessment of your ID. Example, inputting the ID 07.CD will allow the function to perform a search or Assessment of the ID. Inputting the complete ID like 07.CD.40 should still produce the same results but more accurately.
The Strunz option also has input filters to verify that the ID you’re inputting corresponds to the format used by Strunz ID per text field. The filters will check for…
If the left text field does not exceed the number 10, does not have more than 2 letters and if all inputted figures are numeric.
If the center text field does not have more than 2 letters and they are all non-numeric.
If the right text field does not contain more than 3 letters. If should it have 3 letters, the first two are numeric or should it have two letters, then all are numeric.
The 'Strunz class' option allows you to search for minerals based on the 10 Strunz classes in the Nickel-Strunz classification 9th edition standards. You can also search for minerals that lack Strunz IDs. To do this, begin by…
Tapping the 'Strunz class' checkbox to activate the 'Choose class' dropdown menu on its right.
Tap the dropdown menu to see the 10 different classes for you to choose from.
Tap the desired class on the list to confirm your selection.
Tap the floating blue button at the bottom of the tool to begin a search for your class.
When satisfied with your IDs, tap the floating button at the lower right of the tool to begin. If you’re in 'Search' mode and results are found, you will receive a list of card(s) matching your ID. The cards will show the name of the mineral and the ID you searched. Tapping any of the cards will direct you to the 'Mineral details' page of the mineral you tapped.

If you are in 'Access' mode, you will be directed to a page with the assessment summary of your ID.
