With over 5,000 minerals in the database, keeping track of a handful of them can be tedious. That’s where the Favorites tool comes in because it serves as the quick access to your most frequently studied minerals.
Favorites tool with five cards
The Favorites tool is the default tool Smart mineralogist initializes when launched. However, should you prefer the App to initialize another tool, you can change this behavior in App settings.
The Favorites tool holds a list of minerals you’ve added to favorites, or a blank banner with instructions on how to quickly add minerals to it. When minerals are added, a 'favorite card' is created unique to each mineral sorted alphabetically. The card has basic information about the mineral to help you quickly identify it. Tapping any of the favorite cards will open the 'Mineral details' section relative to that mineral.
The Favorites tool has only two Toolbar action icons. The left most icon is the search icon which starts the App’s search interface. See the 'Introduction > App search' topic to learn how to effectively use this tool. The right icon is an overflow menu with two options. The first option allows you to clear all your favorites cards as explained on the "Clearing your Favorites" text at the end of this page. The second option allows you to configure the favorite tool’s text scrolling behavior. By default, Smart mineralogist will auto-scroll long text or formulae if it cannot fit in the single text line of any mineral card. But if you do not want any scrolling behavior, tap this option to disable text scrolling on the Favorites section only.
For large screen devices, the favorite cards occupies only half the screen of the device’s display while the second half is populated by a Summary section of the top mineral card on the list.
If you need a mineral to be included in your favorites, the following two methods will accomplish your task.
Method 1 involves using the '+' floating button…
Tap the '+' button present on the lower right of the favorites window.
A new interface will pop up with a single search capable text input area at its top center and a body holding your current list of favorites cards (if available).
Use the text input area to type the name of the mineral you wish to add to favorites.
As you are typing the name of your mineral, search suggestions will be displayed below the text input area.
Should you see the name of the mineral you want to add among the suggestions, tap it to immediately add it to your favorites.
A confirmation will appear shortly indicating a successful addition of the mineral to your favorites and the mineral list below the text input area will update to verify the inclusion of your new favorites card.
Repeat this cycle until all your minerals are added to favorites.
Press twice the back button as per your device’s configuration to return back to the favorites menu.
Adding to favorites using the '+' button
Method 2 involves manually adding the mineral by tapping the star floating button in the lower right corner of the 'Mineral details' page. For more on this method, please read the 'Mineral Details > User interface' topic of this guide.
A favorites card for the mineral rhodochrosite
Similarly to cards in the Mineral index, all favorites card(s) are alike with the exception of the basic information they hold. On the left most side of the card is the mini-portrait of the mineral (when available) while the center to right content is occupied by a row of three titles holding the…
The Name of the Mineral.
Synonyms or varieties of the mineral if available. If both are available, varieties get higher priority.
Chemical formula of the Mineral.
The tablet exclusive expanded 'Summary' provides additional basic information unique to the mineral displayed such as IMA related information and country of discovery. It also serves to show a much larger image of the mineral for quick identification as opposed to the mini-portrait image on the content card. Finally, on the top right corner of each card is an overflow menu icon which expands when tapped to show option(s) originating from the card that was tapped. The overflow menu while expanded will give you an option 'Remove' which will delete the card from the list.
You can modify the behavior of the 'Remove' functionality in the App settings to make it notify you each time you are about to delete a card from favorites. Enabling this feature will cause the app to prompt you for verification before removing a favorite card. This feature is disabled by default.
Wide screen devices have an additional 'Summary' option above the 'Remove' option when displayed on Landscape orientation. If selected, the 'Summary' option will update the wide screen expanded Summary with the content of the favorite card where the selection originated.
